NOVEMBER 2024

Capping of Shafts

The shaft capping has been completed by the Coal Authority and a considerable amount of work has been carried out in clearing and levelling the top level around the capped shafts.  The following pictures show the really substantial shaft "caps" and how neat the area now looks.
The picture on the left is looking towards the North Winding House.

The second picture shows the South Winding House where a sense of the scale of the shaft caps can be seen.

The Pay Office

Work has continued on this building - refer to Archived News from 2023 (link here)

The work was more complex than anticipated due to the  depth of penetration of the root systems of the saplings that had taken  hold in the brick work. Some five courses of brick have had to be removed and reinstated with lime mortar. Due to the mortar not "liking" winter weather, work will not be commenced again until the Spring. However some good progress has been made.
